MGD Civil Engineering has used a TRACTO-TECHNIK UK GRUNDORILL 18ACS to assist in challenging projects throughout Ireland.
MGD first employed TRACTO-TECHNIK’s GRUNDORILL 18ACS machine during an installation of a polyethylene (PE) gas main underneath a river crossing in Crossgar, Northern Ireland, that proved to be difficult for conventional drilling techniques due to changing ground conditions.
The machine, complete with rods and drill heads, efficiently drilled through the hard rock present and the gas pipe was successfully installed in just two days.
Upon project completion, MGD purchased the unit and has since used it on additional projects including bringing natural gas to the new Center Parcs development in Longford Forest and on a 400 m HDD river crossing of PE gas pipe through challenging limestone in Tang, County Westmeath.
MGD also used the machinery on a river crossing in Omagh, Country Tyrone, which was for the installation of one of the final elements of the newly bid gas distribution network and was vital to ensuring the Omagh Hospital was connected to a natural gas supply.
The 18ACS was specifically chosen after site inspection identified the presence of a strong sandstone, with the overall crossing from mobilisation to completion was carried out over one week.
MGD Site Agent Matt Corrigan said the GRUNDODRILL 18ACS has enabled the successful completion of difficult projects while decreasing the completion time.
“This in turn has reduced the impact on the communities where we undertake our work and enables us to offer greater value to customers,” said Mr Corrigan.
