Billionaire-entrepreneur Elon Musk has confirmed his latest venture into underground construction during a TED Talk last month.
“We’re trying to dig a hole under LA. This is to create the beginning of what will hopefully be a 3D network of tunnels to alleviate congestion,” Mr Musk said.
A video exploring Mr Musk’s vision for the future was also presented for the first time, which showed a vehicle entering an intricate underground system of road infrastructure.
“You can much further deep than you can go up, the deepest mines are much deeper than the tallest buildings are tall,” he said.
“You can alleviate any arbitrary level of open congestion with a 3D tunnel network.”
Mr Musk first floated his interest in underground construction in December last year, complaining about the traffic in Los Angeles.

He has since taken to Twitter and requested assistance in naming The Boring Company’s first TBM, with suggestions including Borer the Explorer, Holey Moley and Snoops Dug.
