The pipeline comprises of 1,026 kilometres (638 miles) of 42 inch diameter pipeline extending from Audrain County, Missouri to Clarington, Ohio. REX-East is being developed by the Rockies Express Pipeline LLC, which is a joint venture of Kinder Morgan Energy Partners, Sempra Pipelines and Storage and ConocoPhilips. Where possible the route will parallel existing pipeline and utility corridors, following FERC recommendations.

REX has completed geotechnical surveys and has developed drill profiles for each of the 24 HDDs planned for REX-East. Each site is unique, and design plans have taken the local environment into account, such as topography and soil conditions.

The FERC certificate includes conditions that crossings such as the Big Darby Creek and the Little Miami River will be constructed using Trenchless Technology, i.e. HDD or alternatively, microtunnelling.

Price Gregory Construction Inc. is the prime contractor for the pipeline spread that includes the Little Miami River and Big Darby Creek crossings. It is their intent to use Michel’s Directional Crossings, a division of Michel’s Corporation, to perform the trenchless constructions of these two crossings.

All of the HDD crossings on the project will have a pipe diameter of 42 inches. The crossing of the Big Darby Creek will have a horizontal length of approximately 664 metres. The crossing of the Little Miami River will have an approximate length of 844 metres. The length of the pipeline that can be installed by the HDD method depends on such factors as access to the entry and exit points, geological conditions, and the diameter.

In-service of the fully powered REX-East pipeline to Clarington, Ohio is projected to commence 1 November 2009.
