The ongoing Water Mains Rehabilitation Project, with a planned investment of over £100 million over the next five years, entails upgrading in excess of 1,000 km of water main infrastructure throughout Northern Ireland, dramatically improving the quality, reliability and flexibility of water supply while also reducing leakage.

In an attempt to minimise disruption and reduce the amount of waste material generated, the project team are utilising Trenchless Technology wherever possible. North Ireland Water told Trenchless International that to date 491 km have been installed, with 69 per cent of those mains being installed using No-Dig technology.

Pipe Bursting techniques have been used for 45 per cent of mains, 20 per cent have been installed through directional drilling, and 4 per cent have been completed using sliplining techniques.

North Ireland Water Interim Chief Executive Trevor Haslett said “We are looking forward to working with our two teams of specialist local contractors: Farrans Construction and Lagan Construction, and welcome the opportunity to work with other local companies in the supply chain.”
