The 22 km pipeline will provide an emergency water supply for extinguishing fires, and has dimensions of 125 x 11.4 mm and 225 x 20.5 m. Also, running parallel to this pipeline is a 600 m drinking water pipe with dimensions of 400 x 36.3 mm.
The public utility company Veritas awarded the project contract to egeplast Italia, which worked in cooperation with pipeline contractor ANESE S.r.l.
As the entire city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, trenchless installation techniques were used to minimise damage to the historically significant streetscape. The no-dig approach also prevented any inconvenience to the ten million tourists who visit Venice every year, and assisted the contractor to negotiate the narrow lanes and canals which dominate the city.
Construction of the drinking water pipeline has been successfully completed, and the installation of the emergency water pipeline is scheduled to be finished in mid-2010.
