Large sections of wastewater pipes will be cleaned and relined with cured plastic as part of the £900,000 ($US1.45 million) project in Rothesay to tackle problems caused by saltwater intrusion.

Scottish Water said the work, carried out by Euro Environmental Contractors, will also involve repairs to manholes and cutting back tree roots.

The company has completed site investigation works in the Albert Pier area, including the removal of silt from the sewers using suction tankers and CCTV, to finalise the project design.

Improvements to the 1.2 miles of mainly 900 mmdiameter pipes are expected to take four and a half months.

The project will be running alongside Scottish Water’s work on the company’s £300,000 ($US484,000) Maybole fresh water scheme, which involves improvements to four miles of water mains.

Barhale will be relining about 2.7 miles of existing mains with a thin polyurethane coating. The work will also involve flushing a total of 4.3 miles of pipe in the area.

The Maybole project is expected to be completed within 12 weeks.

The works are part of a multi-million pound scheme of projects which will improve about 700 miles of water pipes throughout Ayrshire over the next two years.
