The 177 km pipeline is intended to secure energy supplies to the mountain resort of Sochi and Olympic facilities under construction, and runs along the Black Sea to the Kudepsta gas distribution station near Sochi, with gas pipeline landfalls near Dzhubga, Tuapse, Kudepsta and Novomikhailovskove.
In addition to a 159.9 km offshore section, the project features onshore sections which traverse the coast. To minimise disruption to these fragile environments, HDD has been used to install sections of the pipe near Tuapse and Kudepsta. This has prevented any interference with the habitats of coastal flora and fauna.
Pipe-laying began in September 2009, and to date 11.8 km of onshore pipe has been installed. Construction on the offshore section has recently commenced, and it is intended that the entire pipeline will be operational by mid-year.
