BC Hydro has contracted Michels Canada to complete the work, which will include a new above-ground substation, a new transmission line under city streets, and the drilling of a crossing under the bed of False Creek for the new transmission line.
Horizontal directional drilling (HDD) beneath False Creek is expected to occur from mid to late February to early May 2011. This will involve drilling a small diameter hole and then completing additional drilling passes until the required diameter for the bundle of pipes is reached, which is approximately 44–48 inches.
HDD under Laurel Street will take place between early March and late April 2011.
The Vancouver City Central Transmission (VCCT) Project will increase reliability of electrical supply throughout Vancouver, and meet the growing demand for power in South False Creek and Mount Pleasant.
