Directional drilling has been used to install a data cable in North-Rhine Westphalia, Germany.
German bore company REVOR were contracted to construct a 388 m optic fibre connection near the Garzweiler mining area. Given that the pipe route traversed a major motorway, HDD was used to install the HDPE 180 mm pipe, which lies approximately 5–6 m below the surface.

RWE Power was responsible for the planning and surveying of the project. Construction work began in late February, and, despite difficult weather conditions, the pipe installation was successfully completed by 2 March.
